Another way for outsiders to get in is this tricky little trick. When people send you a friend request so they can join the gaming side of Facebook with you, "be my neighbor" well I thought it was really harmless. But in fact, it is far from harmless when you let someone be your friend that you do not know; that also gives them access to all your friends and your daily postings and your families postings and their friends. Let me explain. If I send you a friend request and you accept it; I can then go to your timeline and click on your friends list and send them requests through you; that they may want no part of (farmville) and had you not accepted my friend request in the first place than your family and friends would not be getting requests from total strangers under the ruse that we have a mutual friend, you. This little snippet is from another persons facebook page, when I clicked on her name it told me that we have 32 mutual friends and the truth is I have no idea who these people are I just have them on my farm in the Farmville app.
What I am taking away about the people I followed and observed is this; often I noticed that people may say things over the web that they would NEVER say face to face. This can be both positive and negative. If the power of a key board gives that little extra courage someone needs to express themselves in a healthy way than good, but if the power of the key board is someones excuse to be cruel than shame on you; I have actually seen both scenarios on facebook dialogues.
What I will take with me about technology is that there is so much to learn and it is constantly changing so one would do good to keep up. But alas, it is finals week and keeping up is hard to do; according to this facebook post, this is how we do it. Bye now!
Hi Tracie,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post about your experiences with Facebook. I have a Facebook account, but I rarely use it because I find it to be a very impersonal way to interact with people.
The main reason I am on Facebook is to connect with classmates because I'm in charge of our 30 year class reunion. That has been helpful. People have "typed" to me that otherwise probably would never have responded to a phone call or letter (if I could even locate that information for them) and now I can invite them to the next reunion.
I agree with you that some people "hide" behind a keyboard and have courage to type things they wouldn't say to your face. I'm afraid I've been guilty of that myself so I proofread everything I type and it's a good idea to never type "under the influence".
Like you, I am surprised at what people will say on social networking sites.
Happy Finals!
Tina Hastings
I very much enjoyed your posts on Facebook as well. You brought up a lot of things to think about, and decisions to be made if I want to keep my account or close it. Thank you for exploring all the privacy, and how the mutual friend links work. I had no clue, and do in fact find those very annoying myself.
ReplyDeleteI also liked reading your facebook posts ... funny you mentioned facebook games and how random strangers send friend requests. For that sole reason I have a personal account that I use to talk with family and friends, then I have a game account where I don't add friends unless then send requests for gaming purposes. I find that that method is a better way to stop people from sending friends and family unwanted requests for games.
