Getting Started With Reddit
To get started on Reddit, you go to the homepage at http://www.reddit.com/. Once i got to the homepage i scanned the top portion to a link that says "want to join?". After clicking on this tab, a small pop-up menu appeared asking for the desired user name, a password, and an email for the account. That was it, simple and to the point. Within 10 seconds i was a member of the site. I browsed the main page to find todays "highest voted" posts that are usually unique pictures or witty remarks. There are tabs for "hot", "new", "controversial", "top", and "saved". The saved tab is kind of cool, you can find posts or pictures that you like and save them to this area for future viewing. The website runs off of a voting system. You can up-vote a post if you think it is cool, or it spreads a message that you agree with. If you dislike the post you can down-vote it. You can also leave comments for the "OP" or "Original Poster".
I have never posted to this website before so i clicked on the "help" tab at the bottom of the page. It brought up an area full of FAQ's and instructions for contributing and browsing. Since the voting is what reddit is kind of known for i clicked on the tab and got the following definition.
Voting
On reddit your vote means, "I found this interesting," not "This should go on the front page."
Once registered, you can vote all links on reddit up or down based on whether you liked or disliked them. If more people like a link than dislike it, it will rise up the hot page and be seen by more users. Upon voting, the highlighted score will have changed +1 or -1 depending on your vote up or down, respectively. Regardless of individual karmas, all votes affect submission scores equally.
As a general rule, vote up what you liked (and want to see more of) and vote down what you disliked (and don't want to see similar things in the future) -- there's really not much else to it. The community is pretty vigilant about voting down submissions that shamelessly linkjack original sources (don't say that we didn't warn you).
Using my new found powers to vote, i browsed through the Gaming section. I noticed that Diablo 3 was a hot subject which makes sense as i myself have put down near 10 hours on the game and it only came out a day and a half ago. There was also some box are for the new Borderlands 2 game that looked interesting. I gave them both "up-votes" and called it good.
