Getting Started With Pinterest

Here are some directions and some things that I have learned in the process of starting a Pinterest page. I’ll take you on my registration and getting started journey, read below.

I went to www.pinterest.com . Once on pinterest there was a heading Pinterest is an online pinboard organize and share things you love. Followed by a request an invite button. When I clicked on the invite button it then took me to page where I would enter my email address to be sent an invite. I used my Clark email but could have used any email address. I then hit the request invitation button. Right away I received an email thanking me for my request and an invite would be sent soon, but I could explore pins in the meantime, there was a link available to me. I decided to check out the link, it took me back to pinterest, instead of checking out pins I went to the about button so I could learn more while waiting for my invite.

At the about button I clicked on Help. Where I got a lesson named Pinning 101. This is where I learned Pinterest is a virtual pinboard, meaning Pinterest allows you to organize and share things you love on the internet. Furthermore you can also browse things that have already been pinned to other people’s boards. Boards are a way of filing your pins, for example you can make multiple categories such as Recipes, Decorating, Birthdays, and much more, and then you can sort pins into these categories.  To get started pinning, you first need to install the “pin it” button which allows you to grab images (pins) from other websites and post them to your boards.

To install the "pin it" button on Firefox see below.
  • Display your Bookmarks Bar by clicking View, then Toolbars, then Bookmarks Toolbar
  • Drag the “Pin It” button to your Bookmarks Toolbar
  • When you are browsing the web, push the “Pin It” button to pin an image

After the “pin it” button is installed in your browser, the “Pin It” button lets you grab an image from any website and add it to one of your pinboards. When you pin something it automatically uses the source link so the original creator get credit for it.

I found you can also “Follow” users’ pins and boards much like following people on twitter. You   can “follow all” which means you'll have all of a user’s pins on all of their boards shown If the user makes new boards, you will automatically follow them as well. Furthermore you can choose to “follow” only certain boards rather than all. You can also un-follow at any time.

Since Facebook is so popular I thought I would add when you're signed onto Pinterest you can click your username at the top-right toolbar, and then hit Edit Profile. Then, you can add/remove Pinterest to your Facebook Timeline by ON will add your pins to your Facebook Timeline and OFF will remove Pinterest from your Facebook Timeline.

So those are a few things that I learned and think are important to know when getting started on www.pinterest.com

Below is a picture of what boards look like...

And here is what the "pin it" button looks like on your bookmarks or favorites...

Looking forward to posting for all of you next week, Danielle Swanson
